Five Beginner Yoga Poses

Engaging in yoga has become a trending way to boost flexibility, body strength, and mental sharpness. For beginners, starting a yoga practice can be both motivating and confusing with the vast number of poses to learn. 1. Tadasana

Mountain Stance is the beginning of all standing postures. Though it may seem like effortless, it’s all about poise and alignment. Downward-Facing Dog is a key element in many yoga sequences. Start on your on the mat, then lift your glutes toward the ceiling, lifting your legs and forming an inverted V-shape with your body. Keep your hands shoulder-width apart and feet apart at hip distance. This pose elongates the hamstrings, shoulders, and calves while firming up the arms and legs. It also helps to soothe the mind and relieve stress.

3. Warrior Pose I

Warrior I is a dynamic pose that enhances power in the legs and core. Begin in a upright stance, extend one leg back, and bend the front knee while keeping the back leg extended. Extend your arms above you, palms inward. This pose encourages balance, increases stamina, and opens up the chest and hips.

4. Resting Pose

Resting Pose is a gentle rest pose that provides a subtle stretch for the back, hips, and thighs. Start on your on the mat, then sit back on your lower legs and move your arms forward, bringing your head down to the mat. It’s recommended for recovering between more difficult movements or quieting your thoughts when feeling anxious.

5. Pose of the Tree

Tree Balance Pose is a beneficial balance pose for those starting out. Stand tall, move your weight onto one foot, and place the sole of your other foot on your upper leg or calf (keeping off the knee). Hold your hands in front of your chest or extend them overhead. This pose builds your legs, boosts balance, and boosts mindfulness.
